Happy Spring! I hope you have had an opportunity to enjoy our garden. The children have planted seeds. We hope to grow a ‘Friendship salad’ to share by the end of school. Last month we explored the changes that happen in the Spring and learned about objects we see in the night/day sky. This month, we are learning about sound and local plants and animals.
A huge thankyou to Mrs. G and Mrs. S. The children enjoyed learning about Ramadan and Eid. We had a joyous celebration for Eid and the children received many treats !
Last week, I introduced the last 5 of the 103 High Frequency Words that Grade One children should be able to read. I will send home a list of all the words. Your child needs to be able to identify the word within a few seconds, without sounding it out. If the list you receive has ‘sc’ written beside the word, that indicates that he/she was able to read the word, but only after sounding it out.
I have also sent home a paper with all of the Reading Strategies taught year, so that your child can refer to it when reading at home.
In math we are currently working on subtraction.
Our next Math unit will be Canadian coins. The students need to identify each coin and know how much each coin is worth. I will be providing many opportunities for the children to use and talk about coins. You can help at home by reinforcing the names and values of each coin. In addition, try giving your child some change and open up your own pretend store at home!
Hot Weather Ahead
When the warm weather arrives, please remember to protect your child from the sun. On sunny days please send your child with a hat and a spill-proof water bottle. Please apply sunscreen on your child in the morning. Do not send sunscreen to school .
Thank you!
