Kindergarten October News
From Division 4
Thank you for your support and kind words during this very strange September. The children were just beginning to learn the routines and rules of school and our momentum was interrupted. We will continue to learn and practice the routines and rules this month and I am confident that, in a few weeks, everyone will be settled into a full day of school. It is normal for your child to be tired at the end of each week. It’s a big adjustment for them to be in school all day.
Please, Please, please do not park in the Drop-off/Pick-up lane. If our class has not been dismissed, you must circle around. I will try my very best to be on time and have the children waiting by 2:17. This will allow our families time to vacate the school grounds and make room for the Late dismissal parents.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Inside Shoes
With the rainy weather just around the corner, I want to thank you for sending in inside shoes. The children sit and play on our carpet and floor and I want to keep them (floor, carpet, Children) as clean as possible. For safety reasons, the children must wear shoes at all times. (We never know when there will be a fire drill and must vacate the building.)
OUTDOOR Education
We have Outdoor Education every Thursday. Please send your child dressed for the weather.
We will go out rain or shine.
Early Dismissal
As a result of our school closure due to Covid 19, I will not hold Student-Led conferences. I have left this time for parents to phone me with any questions they might have; 604-824-4885. Your child will receive an interim report at the end of October.
Halloween
The Kindergarten students do not wear costumes to school. We will celebrate the occasion with a Kindergarten Pumpkin Activity Time. Your child may like to wear Black and Orange that day.
Some of the topics we focus on in October :
In September, we talked briefly about ‘Patience’ and the importance of not interrupting when a peer is speaking/working with the teacher. It can be difficult for Kindergarten children to wait for a turn with the teacher- especially when there is something REALLY important on their mind (Like, ‘My mom killed a spider this morning!’ – LOL). They are all making good progress in this, very important, skill.
This month I will introduce Math Stations. This is what we call our Math learning time. In October and November the children will learn to work independently with math materials. This organizational technique allows me time to provide small group and individual instruction. The children will engage in counting and building numbers, identifying numerals, subitizing, estimating, Math learning games and treasure boxes.
The children will continue to learn each others names in the month of October through our Special Helper Routine. We are practicing spelling and reading everyone’s name in our class.
As we celebrate each child as the Special Helper, I introduce:
-the idea that print is speech written down
- the difference between words/ letters/ pictures
-the concept of syllables
- correct formation of letters
-the sounds associated with the letters (phonics)
- how the names in our class are the same and different
I am also reinforcing the correct use of capital and lower-case letters in a proper noun. You can help at home by encouraging your child to print his/her name with a capital letter at the beginning and lower-case letters to follow.
Our Self-Regulation focus for October will be: ‘following classroom guidelines and doing your ‘Kindergarten jobs’.
The students are working on:
1. Follow the teacher’s instructions the first time asked
2. Powerful listening (eyes on speaker, no sounds, body still, mind
thinking about topic at hand )
3. Hands and feet off
4. Complete your work; do your best
Important Dates:
Oct. 8 Early Dismissal 11:20am
Oct. 11 Thanksgiving
Oct. 22 Pro-D day (No school for students)
Oct. 29 Kindergarten Pumpkin Party; No Costumes- save them for Sunday J
