April News
I hope everyone had a restful Spring Break. I spent most of my time gardening and repainting our front foyer and office. It’s great to be back at work! I love hearing all about the children’s Spring Break adventures.
This month we will continue to focus on a new letter each day. The focus for this round will be on correct letter formation and include spelling 'Consonant / vowel / Consonant’ words. Our first lessons will be on words in the ‘at’ family (cat, bat, hat, etc.). We are also beginning to talk about reading strategies and sight words. There are no expectations for children in kindergarten to read and spell ; however, I will continue to introduce some beginner reading/literacy strategies and offer opportunities for the students to expand their literacy skills.
In Math, we are exploring Canadian Currency; printing numerals and continue to practice counting to 100. We also ‘play’ with counting different ways (by 2’s, 5’s or 10’s). One important skill for children to learn is called subitizing. This is the skill of knowing how many are in a set of items without counting. Dice are excellent for children beginning to subitize. So break out the Snakes and Ladders or any other game that involves dice for your next Family Game Night.
For the next few months our major theme will be Spring; sub-themes may include: plants/seeds, The Farm/baby animals, oviparous animals and insects.
Outdoor learning
I will try to take the students outside to learn as much as possible as the weather warms up. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. This might( hopefully) include a hat and sunscreen. 😊
